Have you hated your curls when you where 16? Did you ever think that when you turned
30 you will begin to love them again? Have you had to use tools that damage
your hair like the silk press, relaxing cream or hot comb to fit into society?
Many of us that have tried to fit in society since a very young age, have a certain type
of wave to our hair and struggled with finding a look that suits us when we get
older because we have not looked ourselves… our real selves in the mirror and
say how can I use how I look to look awesome. Khadeejah who used to feel that
the way that she could be beautiful would be to have straight hair. She would
relax her hair and then silk press it so she could do styles that looked trendier
and more modern.
A few years later her hair started falling out. She got really concerned about it
and began looking for solutions. One of the biggest obstacles in her way was to
accept that her hair which came under the curliest hair type (4C) and move onto
owning it. It became hard to overcome. She said in her Instagram post “My scalp
was tender”. You can imagine with scalp burns, each time she would touch it, a
sharp burning pain would be unleashed on her scalp, and it would stay there for
some minutes. She would probably just freeze and think to herself… why? In an Instagram
post she said “One day on my birthday, I made the decision to stop relaxing my
hair.
I transitioned for exactly a year and during that time, I had protective styles
done while I did research on how to care for natural hair. It was a process of
trial and error, but I made it work. I chopped off all the relaxed ends after
transitioning for a year and my tinny winny Afro was so cute! I had to learn
what products worked for my hair, how to care for it and literally how to wear
it! I also had to learn the hard way that I couldn’t just put my hair in a bun
within 5 mins! Trying times lol but we prevailed!
Exactly a year after being natural, I was so excited to see how long my hair was”.
The first step in changing damaged hair is to understand what hair type you have so
you can do what is best for your hair. Accepting this is bold, and it is
unique. It is the difference of having trendy hair and completely beautiful
hair that is amazing to wear and gets you thousands of compliments.
